What sedation dentistry actually means

Sedation dentistry uses medication to keep you calm and comfortable during treatment. It ranges from light relaxation to a sleep-like state where you have no memory of the procedure at all.

It was designed for people who feel real anxiety about the dentist. If you have been putting off treatment because of fear, this is the thing that removes that barrier.

Sedation may be right for you if:

You have a low pain threshold
Sitting still in the chair is difficult for you
Your teeth are unusually sensitive
You have a strong gag reflex
You need several procedures in one visit
Dental anxiety has kept you from getting care

Your Options

Three levels of comfort

The right choice depends on your health history, the procedure, and how much anxiety you feel. Dr. Maz will walk through all of it with you before anything is scheduled.

◆ Signature
Deepest comfort

IV Sedation

Medication is delivered directly through a vein, so it works within seconds and the dose can be adjusted moment to moment. You drift into a sleep-like state and wake with no memory of the procedure.

Dr. Maz earned this certification at USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry. He administers and monitors it himself, tracking your vitals throughout. No outside anesthesiologist is needed.

Best for: significant dental anxiety, complex or long procedures, multiple treatments in one visit
Middle option

Oral Sedation

Taken as a pill before your appointment. You stay relaxed and calm throughout. Depending on the dose, you may be drowsy but awake, or drift close to sleep.

Best for: moderate anxiety, patients who prefer not to have an IV
Lightest option

Inhaled Sedation

Often called laughing gas. You breathe it in through a small mask and feel relaxed within minutes. It wears off quickly, so most patients can drive themselves home.

Best for: mild nerves, shorter procedures, patients who need to drive afterward

Sedation is not general anesthesia

People often assume these are the same thing. They are not, and the difference matters for your recovery.

Sedation at our office
Fewer medications used overall
Much less strain on your body
Faster, easier recovery afterward
Handled entirely in our office
Enough for every procedure we perform
vs
General anesthesia
You are put completely under
Significantly more strain on the body
Longer recovery time
Usually requires a surgical setting
Reserved for invasive surgery
Where It Applies

Sedation works with every procedure here

Root canal therapy

The most common request. Light sedation is usually enough for full comfort, and IV sedation is available if you would rather sleep through it entirely.

Tooth extraction

The right level varies. Deeply impacted teeth may call for heavier sedation, while many extractions are completely comfortable with a lighter option.

Emergency visits

Sedation is available after hours too. If you are in severe pain at 2am and dread the chair, that combination is exactly what this exists for.

Common Questions

Sedation questions, answered honestly

Is IV sedation safe?
For healthy adults, yes. IV sedation is used routinely in dentistry and medicine. Dr. Maz is certified through USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry and monitors your vital signs continuously throughout the procedure. You will complete a full health review before anything is scheduled, and he will tell you honestly if sedation is not appropriate for your situation.
Will I be completely unconscious?
Not in the way general anesthesia works. With IV sedation you enter a deep, sleep-like state. You can still respond if spoken to, but most patients have no memory of the procedure afterward. It feels like you closed your eyes and it was over.
How is this different from general anesthesia?
General anesthesia puts you fully under and places significant strain on the body. It is meant for invasive surgery and usually requires a surgical setting. Sedation uses fewer medications, is far gentler on your system, and recovery is much quicker. Every procedure we perform can be done comfortably with sedation.
Do I need someone to drive me home?
For IV sedation and oral sedation, yes. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours afterward. Inhaled sedation is the exception. It clears from your system quickly, so most patients can drive themselves home after a short rest.
How do I prepare for a sedation appointment?
You will get specific instructions at your consultation, but generally:
  • Do not eat or drink for several hours beforehand
  • Bring a full list of your current medications
  • Arrange your ride home in advance
  • Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that roll up easily
  • Arrive 30 to 60 minutes early so we can prepare
Which type of sedation is right for me?
Three things decide it: your health and medical history, the procedure you need, and how much anxiety you feel about it. Dr. Maz reviews all three with you at the consultation. There is no pressure toward the deepest option. Many patients do beautifully with lighter sedation.
Can I have sedation for an emergency visit?
In many cases, yes. Because Dr. Maz administers the sedation himself, there is no waiting on an outside anesthesiologist to become available. Call 310.248.3636 and describe your situation. See our emergency page for what to do right now.
How will I feel afterward?
Groggy for a few hours, which is normal. Most people rest at home the remainder of the day and feel like themselves by the next morning. You will get written aftercare instructions before you leave, and Dr. Maz frequently follows up by phone the next day to check on you.
Does insurance cover sedation?
Coverage varies by plan and by why the sedation is medically needed. We provide an upfront estimate before any treatment so there are no surprises. PPO patients can often be reimbursed for part of the cost. We are not contracted with Medi-Cal, Denti-Cal, or HMO plans. Call us and we will help you check your benefits.

Anxious about the chair? That is exactly why this exists.
