Do I need a root canal?

If you are having severe tooth pain from an infection, the answer is very likely yes. Infections reach the inner part of your tooth called the dental pulp. Inside the pulp are nerves, tissues, and blood vessels. When they get infected, the pain can be intense. If left untreated, the infection keeps spreading.

The Process

How does treatment work?

A root canal has four steps. Dr. Maz completes most cases in 60 to 90 minutes. You can return to normal activities the very next day.

Numb the area

Local anesthesia is applied first. You will feel nothing during the procedure. IV sedation is also available if you want to be completely asleep.

Access the tooth

A small opening is made to reach the infected pulp inside. Dr. Maz uses surgical-grade microscopes for precision at every step.

Clean and shape

The infected pulp and roots are removed. The inner tooth is cleaned thoroughly to make sure no infection remains.

Fill and seal

The tooth is filled with a biocompatible material and sealed. A crown is usually recommended afterward to protect the tooth long term.

Is a root canal painful?

Root canals have a bad reputation. But modern techniques have changed everything. Most patients feel nothing during the procedure.

Can a root canal save my tooth?
In most cases, yes. Root canal therapy removes the infection and saves the natural tooth. This is almost always preferable to extraction. If the infection has destroyed most of the tooth's structure or the tooth is broken at the gumline, it may not be possible to save it. Dr. Maz will always assess your case honestly and recommend the best path for you.
What is the success rate of root canal treatment?
The success rate of root canal therapy is between 85% and 97%, depending on the extent of infection and your overall oral health. Placing a dental crown immediately after the procedure increases the chances of long-term success significantly. A crown protects the tooth and keeps it strong.
What happens during the procedure?
The area is numbed with local anesthesia first. Dr. Maz then makes a small opening to access the inner tooth. The infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped.
