Root Canal Therapy

According to the American Association of Endodontics, an endodontic (root canal therapy) procedure is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes: deep decay repeated dental procedures on the tooth or a crack or chip in the tooth. In addition, an injury to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

Endodontic procedures has the advantage to save your own natural teeth. Root canal therapy is when the removal of the inflamed or infected pulp is cleaned and shaped, then filled and sealed appropriately. All other restorations will be done by a general practitioner.

Extraction and Implants

Fractures and cracks in teeth can lead to loss of teeth. A tooth extraction is needed when a tooth can no longer be saved endodontically. Once an extraction is performed, an implant will ultimately be needed to replace the empty space. At Maz Endodontics, Dr. Maz and Staff are experienced and skilling in extracting, bone grafting and placing dental implants. Dental implants are the most state-of-the-art tooth replacement option available today. The implant is comprised of a titanium post that serves as the root of your replacement tooth, a porcelain crown, and an abutment that attaches the crown to the implant. With proper oral care, a dental implant can replace a natural tooth for a lifetime. Dental implants have been used for several decades by patients of all ages. They can replace a single tooth, several teeth or support partial or full dentures.

Root Canal Therapy Retreatment

Each case is different in that after having root canal treatment the tooth may incur infection again. This can be due to a missed canal or reocurring infection. When this occurs, endodontic retreatment is needed. The endodontist then removes any infection, cleans and shapes the canals, and places new filling materials. All other restorations will be done by a general practitioner.

Intravenous Sedation

Dr. Maz and Staff are Intravenous Sedation (IV Sedation) certified. After completing a rigorous course from the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at USC. Dr. Maz wanted to find a way to eliminate the phobia and anxiety that is associated with dentistry. We have waived out the need to bring in an anesthesiologist to our office. During the consultation, Dr. Maz and staff will evaluate to see if you are a good candidate for sedation. Should you have a severe infection and swelling, IV antibiotics can also be administered. Please feel free to contact our office, should you have any questions about sedation dentistry.

Apicoectomy

Occasionally, endodontic procedures will fail and an endodontic surgery called an Apicoectomy is needed. An Apicoectomy is when the endodontist flaps open the gum tissue that is near the tooth to see the underlying bone and to remove any inflamed or infected tissue. The infected root will also be removed. A filling material is placed at the end of the root to prevent reinfection.
